Flower Boy. I'm a huge hip hop fan but never really got into Tyler, the Creator. His music was a bit too brash and inconsistent, but with this album I think he developed an amazing and cohesive sound.
I've been bumping this album nonstop for the last year and a half. It's very "grand" and you can tell he poured his life into making this album. There are a few songs that still give my goosebumps every time I listen.
Each song flows into the next, so it's a great album to listen to while writing code or getting a deep task completed. Probably my favorite album of the last 2 years.
I've always had some entrepreneurial drive. Been starting little businesses and doing random crap online since I was like 14 years old. But, I took the usual path - I went to college, got an accounting degree, then worked in some corporate shit for a few years. I got bored quickly.
A few years ago, I went to a coding boot camp. Then I became a software engineer. I got bored quickly again. I dreaded the idea of having a normal career. I tried a "real" startup last year and it failed.
So I decided to start by building something on the side that didn't interfere with my full-time job - something where I could put in a lot of work on nights and weekends and still make progress. Why not start a blog? It's a great way to build an audience, find holes in the market, and make some money. That's what inspired me to get started. Everything else moved quickly after that.
Celebrate the small wins, and don't give up.
There are many times since I started where I was dreading the entire project - it seemed hopeless. I've thought many times - do people even care about reading my website? I've had stories totally flop and days with less than 100 visitors on the website and no new email subscribers. I've started building other products and stuff too.
But, then something tiny happens like someone sent me an email about how Starter Story inspired them - you have to celebrate that - especially in the beginning. And never give up. Take a break, but never give up.
